An energy calculation, also called a heat load calculation, measures the heating and cooling load of a home in BTU/h. That load determines the right HVAC system size (tonnage) and efficiency. The calculation looks at the full building envelope (windows, walls, insulation, roof, floors, and doors) and shows where the home may be losing energy efficiency. In Florida’s hot, humid climate, correct sizing matters because an oversized system can short cycle and struggle with humidity control.
Every project is different, but an energy calculation generally follows these steps:
Gathering building information such as size, layout, orientation, appliances, and building materials, starting from your blueprint PDFs.
The data is analyzed using ACCA-approved software that models the building’s energy use. The analysis accounts for insulation R-values, window performance, air infiltration, climate zone, and duct layout, following ACCA Manual J, Manual S, and Manual D.
Results are compiled into a report showing where energy is consumed, with recommendations for energy-saving measures and the forms your project needs, including Form R405 and Manual J, S, and D calculations.
